What's the Song of Autumn 2017?

Earlier this week, we established two simple, irrefutable facts: 1. that there is such a thing as an Autumn Song: jangly, aching music that pairs nicely with chilly afternoons, broken hearts, and warm beverages, and 2. that they are the best.

Now that we’re all on the same page, we must go the extra mile (over crunching leaves) and designate a Song of the Autumn for 2017. Is there one single jam that defines the season for this year? Did one particular song put its arm around us this excruciating fall and gently whisper that we were not alone? Does this autumn have its own “Despacito?”

We have a few choices, all of which are below, and any of which will do. Put on your chunkiest turtleneck sweater, lament your poor performance in this year’s Fantasy Football season, and join us.

Jason Isbell & the Nashville Sound – “Last Of My Kind”

Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile – “Continental Breakfast”

Courtney Barnett has quickly become an Autumn Music staple, bringing the scruffy charm Evan Dando used to serve up so effortlessly. This song will haunt your brunches the way Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeroes' "Home" did a few years ago. Layer up and get that outdoor table while you still can.

Car Seat Headrest – “War is Coming (If You Want It)”

The perfect song for a moment in history in which there is- on its best day- constant terrible news and the ever-present background threat of nuclear annihilation.

Micah Schnabel – “Jazz and Cinnamon Toast Crunch”

The most controversial selection of the bunch for those who follow such things, i.e. “me.” I had trouble swallowing this song when I heard it for the first time. Was it the desperate sincerity, so startling at this moment in time? Was it the vocal delivery, described by a friend of mine as “Weird Al fronting The Hold Steady”? I don’t know, but I’ve turned a corner, and now I can’t get enough. The whole album, Your New Norman Rockwell, is gorgeous, and I want to move away from Los Angeles so that I can appreciate it in the way it was intended, i.e. “under a light down jacket.”

The Psychedelic Furs – "Love My Way"

Yes, the strongest contender for 2017's Song of Autumn was released in 1982. But its inclusion in the film Call Me By Your Name has fully re-contextualized it, and its icy synths make it the perfect song for a cold-weather dance party. Bring your own peach.
