The child, Jonathan Lopez, died last Saturday.
Smiley Faces Daycare, located on Penthouse Place in Las Vegas, featured no signs or décor indicating it was a daycare.
Last November, police were called to the home and found then-7-month-old Jonathan unresponsive and struggling to breathe.
It’s recommended that a daycare only have two infants to one caregiver. A caregiver shouldn’t be looking after more than six children over the age of 2.
“If that person isn’t licensed then you definitely need to be doing those checks yourself, asking those different questions [concerning] background checks, child development,” Haddad said.
Prevent Child Abuse Nevada regularly holds classes that teach parents how to choose a daycare. The best tools, Haddad said, are your own eyes and ears.
“If there is something like one person and 10 children, you need to think about what kind of capacity there is for that, especially if they’re all different age ranges,” she said. “The number one thing we find most common for fatalities is children in a situation where there’s one adult and a child which just won’t stop crying.”
Haddad suggests parents visit NV Silver State Stars for a database of daycare centers and information of their licenses.
