ITHACA, N.Y. – The National Weather Service is predicting severe weather conditions in Ithaca and South Central New York on Thursday. A flash flood warning has been issued, expected to continue throughout the afternoon.
A flash flood warning has been issued for Southern Seneca County, Norther Schuyler County, Southeastern Yates County, Southern Cayuga County and all of Tompkins County. The National Weather Service reported that approximately two inches of rain has already fallen since 12:40 p.m. and is not expected to let up until 4:45 p.m. Additional thunderstorms are predicted throughout this afternoon.
The NWS reported that several municipalities in the region are on high alert to expect some flooding, including Ithaca, Hector, Cayuga Heights, Lansing, Enfield, Groton and Covert.
Reports suggest the Cayuga Inlet may experience high flows and possible flooding from Groton to Moravia. Other rivers and creeks are also expected to experience issues related to flooding as well. According to the NWS, excessive rainfall from Thursday afternoon's heavy rainfall could also cause flooding to urban areas, highways, streets, and underpasses as well as other drainage areas and low lying spots.
While reports suggest the flash flooding is imminent in the county, The NWS is asking local residents to remain aware of their location relative to streams, rivers and creeks which may become more dangerous with the heavy rain. Hikers and campers are advised to act with caution.
